BPS Performance Review

Not sure where to start?

A building may be consuming more than expected. A portfolio may contain underperforming assets. Capital projects may be approaching without a clear performance strategy. Or your organization may simply have more data than it knows how to use.

The BPS Performance Review provides a focused first step.

What is a BPS Performance Review?

The Performance Review is a preliminary assessment designed to help determine:

  • What performance questions matter most
  • What information is currently available
  • Where meaningful gaps exist
  • Which opportunity areas deserve attention
  • What level of further analysis is appropriate

It is intended to create clarity before a larger technical engagement begins.

What we typically review

Depending on the situation:

  • Building or portfolio characteristics
  • Building type and use
  • Floor area
  • Locations
  • Utility consumption
  • Utility cost
  • Operating patterns
  • Known technical issues
  • Existing sustainability targets
  • Capital plans
  • Prior studies
  • Current management processes
  • Relevant regulatory considerations

Not every review requires every data category.

What you receive

The specific output will depend on available information, but typically includes:

  • Performance context A concise summary of the current situation.
  • Initial observations Important performance signals identified from available information.
  • Data gaps Information that may be necessary for deeper analysis.
  • Priority questions The issues that deserve further investigation.
  • Potential opportunity areas Where additional analysis may create value.
  • Recommended next step The most appropriate BPS Solution or other action.

What the Performance Review is not

The BPS Performance Review is not:

  • A full energy audit
  • Detailed engineering analysis
  • An investment-grade study
  • A guaranteed savings assessment
  • Engineering design
  • A substitute for commissioning
  • A compliance certification

Where deeper technical work is required, BPS will identify the appropriate next step.

Who should use it?

The Performance Review is useful for:

  • Building owners
  • Asset managers
  • Portfolio managers
  • Facilities directors
  • Operations leaders
  • Sustainability teams
  • Capital-program leaders
  • Organizations with multiple facilities
  • Organizations planning major upgrades
  • Organizations uncertain where performance analysis should begin

Typical starting questions

For a single building

  • Why is this building consuming more energy than expected?
  • Are systems operating effectively?
  • Should we undertake an energy audit?
  • Should we commission or recommission the building?
  • Which improvement opportunities deserve further investigation?

For a portfolio

  • Which buildings require attention first?
  • Where are costs unusually high?
  • Can assets be segmented by performance?
  • Which properties deserve deeper analysis?
  • How should we prioritize investment?

What happens next?

The BPS Performance Review may identify a need for:

In some cases, the correct recommendation may simply be that no larger BPS engagement is currently justified.
